A cancer diagnosis is life-altering, especially when it happens during pregnancy. For Arelly, this reality emerged when she was 28 weeks pregnant with her third child in early 2024. Amidst the joy of expecting a new baby, she faced a diagnosis of stage 4 stomach cancer. Yet, through determination, love, and an unwavering spirit, she navigated this dual journey with courage. This is Arelly’s story of battling stomach cancer during pregnancy, and finding hope in the face of adversity.

The Start of a Life-Changing Diagnosis

In January 2024, Arelly noticed a mass protruding from her belly button and felt persistent fatigue—symptoms she initially attributed to her pregnancy and caring for her toddler. Multiple visits to the ER led to her concerns being brushed aside until February 25th, when the mass began leaking fluid. Finally, doctors acted urgently, and a surgeon removed the mass. The following day, the life-altering news arrived: it was cancer, specifically stage 4 stomach cancer (gastric adenocarcinoma).

Facing Stomach Cancer During Pregnancy: Treatment Begins

With the diagnosis confirmed, Arelly confronted the daunting reality of managing stomach cancer while pregnant. Her medical team devised a plan that allowed her to start chemotherapy during her pregnancy. With tremendous bravery, she had a port placement and began her first chemotherapy treatment with FLOT. This treatment was not only a fight for her own life but also for her unborn child.

A Moment of Hope: Welcoming Her Baby Amidst the Battle

On April 16th, 2024, Arelly gave birth to her son via a planned C-section. The weeks and months leading up to his birth were marked by daily monitoring, hospital stays, and moments of uncertainty. But through it all, she maintained hope and strength. The safe arrival of her son was a powerful testament to her resilience and determination. Despite the physical and emotional toll, holding her newborn brought immense joy amidst the challenge.

Continuing the Fight: Postpartum Treatment and Advocacy

After delivering her baby, Arelly resumed chemotherapy treatments, driven by her love for her children and supported by her family. This phase of her journey underscores the importance of advocacy and support, not just from medical professionals but from loved ones who play an essential role in the healing process.
