When Mike Trinidad received his stomach cancer diagnosis, his world changed instantly—but his faith, family, and church community became his anchor. His story reflects resilience, gratitude, and a deep sense of purpose that continues to guide him through every stage of his treatment.

Early Symptoms and Diagnosis

Mike’s first noticeable symptom was difficulty swallowing. Though he had been managing stomach issues for years—including a history of gastritis—he did not suspect cancer.

Because colon cancer runs in his family, he had undergone regular colonoscopy and endoscopy screenings. Both were clear six years ago, and again three years ago.

But by late 2023, symptoms reappeared. His doctor recommended waiting for his scheduled January scope, but during the February 2024 procedure, everything changed.

His gastroenterologist delivered the news no patient wants to hear:

“Mike, I suspect that you have cancer. I saw a tumor in the upper part of your stomach near the esophagus.”

Further assessments confirmed stage 3 gastric cancer.

Treatment and Complications

Mike immediately underwent tumor removal surgery on February 27, 2024.

Two months later, he learned that 9 out of 12 lymph nodes contained cancer cells—an indication that the cancer was more advanced than hoped.

His treatment included:

  • 4 cycles of FOLFOX chemotherapy

  • 40 sessions of radiation therapy

  • Recovery that included rebuilding strength and weight

Mike responded well initially, but soon faced new complications.

Ascites and Treatment Changes

Fluid began building in his abdomen—a condition known as ascites.

Doctors drained:

  • A smaller amount during the first episode

  • 3.5 liters during the second one

Because the cancer was progressing, his oncologist switched treatment from FOLFOX to FOLFIRI, then again to a new chemotherapy cocktail when fluid buildup persisted.

Despite this, Mike remained grateful that his side effects were mild:
“No vomiting… only mild nausea… and even that was rare.”

Faith, Purpose, and Strength

Mike serves as an associate pastor and church elder, and his faith has been central to his resilience.

“When you find purpose in your cancer journey, everything else follows.”

He believes God allowed this chapter of his life so he could encourage others walking a similar path.

With that purpose in mind, Mike now uses every opportunity—including this video and interview—to uplift other cancer patients.

“If I can use my story to inspire others, I will take whatever is given to me.”

Advice for Others Facing Cancer

Mike’s guidance for others includes:

1. Lean on Faith or Personal Purpose

Finding meaning transforms the experience.

2. Accept Support from Community

His global network of family, church members, and friends strengthened him through every step.

3. Don’t Delay Screenings

Even after years of clear scopes, cancer was still present—a reminder of the importance of staying vigilant.

4. Share Your Story

You never know who needs to hear it.

Mike’s Hope for the Future

Mike hopes to continue inspiring others through his testimony. His mission now extends beyond treatment—toward advocacy, awareness, and emotional support for those navigating the same journey.

He is a powerful reminder that courage is not the absence of fear—it is choosing hope in the face of the unknown.
