Carmita Lasso’s family story is a testament to unwavering strength and hope in the face of severe health challenges. At 45, Carmita reflects on her family’s battles with cancer, acknowledging that while cancer seems to run in their family, so does an unparalleled determination to overcome it. “We are prone to get cancer, but we are also prone to kick its ass,” she asserts.
The Unexpected Diagnosis of Carmita’s Father
In 2018, life took a dramatic turn for Carmita’s father when he was diagnosed with stage 4 stomach cancer at the age of 73. The initial sign was a swollen lymph node on his neck, which grew rapidly. When doctors performed a biopsy, they discovered the cancer had originated in his stomach and had spread to the lymph nodes. Despite being told he had only a 15% chance of survival, Carmita’s father met the diagnosis head-on, saying, “15%, let’s go. I’m game.”
The Fight for Life: Chemotherapy and Maintenance
The treatment journey was rigorous and tested the family’s resolve. Carmita’s father underwent four rounds of powerful chemotherapy infusions that took a significant toll on his health. He was later prescribed capecitabine as a maintenance drug at the highest dose, which proved challenging. However, over time, the dosage was adjusted to a more manageable level. Today, nearly eight years later, Carmita’s father, now approaching 80, continues to maintain his health with the same fierce determination.
Carmita’s Dedication as a Caregiver
Carmita played a pivotal role in her father’s treatment and recovery. Leaving her job, she became his primary caregiver, managing appointments, advocating for him, and providing emotional support. “My life took a standstill,” Carmita recalls, emphasizing the importance of unwavering support during such challenging times.
A Rare Challenge: Carmita’s Brother’s Nasal Tumor
In 2015, the family faced another battle when Carmita’s brother was diagnosed with a rare nasal tumor. The tumor required radiation treatment, which caused significant side effects, including impaired swallowing and the need for a feeding tube. Despite the grueling treatment, her brother fought through with the support of Carmita, who stepped in to assist and give his wife a much-needed break during the process.
The Importance of Mental Strength and Family Support
Both experiences reinforced the importance of mental resilience and family support in overcoming cancer. Carmita’s father’s positive attitude played a crucial role in his fight. “You need to have strong mental fortitude to deal with it,” Carmita notes. The family’s collective support proved to be a lifeline in navigating these health crises.
Continuing the Fight: Lessons and Hope
Carmita’s story is a powerful reminder that even in the face of dire statistics and unexpected diagnoses, hope and determination can make all the difference. Her father’s and brother’s recoveries serve as a beacon of hope, underscoring that a positive attitude and strong support network can turn seemingly insurmountable challenges into triumphs.
